The story, ownership and production of Benromach

Where is Benromach distillery?

Benromach is in Forres, in Moray, at the edge of Speyside. The official site says its soft water rises in the Chapelton Spring in the Romach Hills, a couple of miles behind the distillery.

Benromach history: 1898 to the revival

Duncan MacCallum and F.W. Brickmann founded the Benromach Distillery Company in 1898. MacCallum had worked at the Glen Nevis distillery in Campbeltown and Brickmann was a spirit broker in Leith. Construction began in 1898, but because of the depression in the Scotch whisky industry, distilling did not start until 1900, and the distillery closed the same year for lack of money. The distillery was designed by Charles C. Doig, the architect of many Speyside distilleries.

  • 1911: Harvey McNair and Co of London acquired the distillery and kept distilling until the First World War.

  • After the war it was run by Benromach Distillery Ltd until 1925.

  • 1938: Associated Scottish Distilleries took over, later becoming part of Scottish Malt Distillers.

  • 1966 to 1974: the distillery was modernised. It was officially closed in 1983.

  • 1993: Gordon and MacPhail acquired the distillery and restoration began, with a design that could be run by one man.

  • 1998: the distillery was reopened by Charles, then Prince of Wales. Bottling of the new malt started in 2004.

  • 2018: the distillery released its first gin, Red Door.

Who owns Benromach?

Benromach is owned by Gordon and MacPhail, a family owned spirits company based in Elgin, Morayshire. The official site says the company was established as a grocery business in 1895 and is known for maturing and bottling some of the world's oldest and rarest single malts.

The "lost smoke" of Speyside

Benromach says that before the 1960s, subtle peat smoke was at the heart of Speyside whisky, because malted barley was dried over fires fuelled by peat. The distillery presents its style as a revival of that approach, with barley malted with a little peat smoke.

How Benromach is made

The official site sets out a five stage hand made process:

  • Malting and milling: Scottish barley grown locally and malted with a little peat smoke, ground in a four roller "Boby" mill.

  • Mashing: distillers bring the mash down by hand, controlling the flow of water from the Chapelton Spring and grist into the mash tun.

  • Fermentation: three to five days in larch washbacks. Benromach uses brewer's as well as distiller's yeast, measured by hand.

  • Distillation: double distillation in two bespoke copper pot stills, with the cut taken by the distillers.

  • Maturation: first fill casks seasoned with bourbon or sherry, in traditional dunnage style warehouses.

Wikipedia gives the equipment as one stainless steel mash tun holding 1.5 tonnes, thirteen larch washbacks of 11,000 litres, a 7,500 litre wash still and a 5,000 litre spirit still, both steam heated, with annual output around 400,000 litres.
