Where is Strathisla Distillery?
Keith, Moray, Speyside, Scotland. This region contains several historic whisky producers with very different styles.
Strathisla history and ownership
George Taylor and Alexander Milne established the Milltown distillery in Keith in 1786, according to the Chivas Brothers archive. The site later used Milton and Strathisla names, taking its best-known modern name from its landscape and river.
The distillery endured nineteenth-century ownership changes and major rebuilding after fire damage. The striking twin pagoda roofs, waterwheel and traditional stone courtyard are significant parts of its recognised architectural character.
In 1950 Seagram purchased the distillery at public auction and transferred it to Chivas Brothers. Today Chivas Brothers is part of Pernod Ricard. Strathisla remains an important source of malt whisky for Chivas Regal blends while producing its own smaller distillery-exclusive single malts.
How Strathisla whisky is made
Strathisla's production identity is closely linked to Chivas Regal: its fruity, floral malt helps the blend's recognised character. The distillery draws on centuries of Speyside traditions rather than competing on high-volume standalone single malt distribution.
A range of cask-specific expressions is sold as Strathisla distillery exclusives. The official shop currently lists a 10 Year Old from first-fill sherry butts, and 11, 12, 15 and 16 Year Old expressions from first-fill American oak barrels. These bottlings should not be treated as one permanent mass-market core collection.
What makes Strathisla distinctive?
Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky with components from several distilleries. A Strathisla single malt is spirit distilled at Strathisla alone. The two are related historically, but Chivas Regal 12 Year Old is not the same bottle as Strathisla 12 Year Old.

Rare, limited and special releases
The official Strathisla shop lists limited first-fill sherry and American oak single malts in different ages. The Distillery Reserve Collection also includes cask-specific releases, such as a 2025 10 Year Old first-fill sherry bottling at 62.7% ABV. That strength belongs to that specific edition and should not be generalised.
Strathisla awards and recognition
Guinness World Records recognises Strathisla, founded in 1786, as the oldest operating Scotch whisky distillery. This is a heritage record, not a whisky tasting medal.
Where to buy Strathisla whisky
Availability differs across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Europe. The product and distillery sources below are intended to help you identify the exact release rather than imply any retailer has confirmed live stock. Check the bottle's age, ABV, edition, and distribution market before purchasing.
Visiting Strathisla Distillery
Strathisla welcomes visitors for Chivas Regal brand-home tours, workshops and tastings. The official Chivas FAQ describes experiences from about 45 minutes to half a day; seasonal opening and prices should be checked before booking. The distillery is in Keith, rather than Dufftown town centre.
