Where is Craigellachie Distillery?
Craigellachie, near Aberlour and the Spey–Fiddich meeting point. This region contains several historic whisky producers with very different styles.
Craigellachie history and ownership
Craigellachie Distillery was established in 1891 by investors associated with Alexander Edward. It has long produced robust malt whisky, much of which was used in blended Scotch before its own range grew in prominence.
Bacardi acquired Craigellachie through the John Dewar & Sons business in 1998. The official single malt relaunch gave the distillery a distinctive prime-number age statement system, with bottles aged 13, 17 and 23 years.
The brand's FAQ explains that prime numbers express its eccentric character. The 19 Year Old is a travel retail bottling, while the Exceptional Cask Collection explores rarer individual casks and small batches.
How Craigellachie whisky is made
Craigellachie uses traditional worm tub condensers: the vapour passes through coils in large cooling tanks instead of modern shell-and-tube condensers. The process gives different copper contact and contributes to the distillery's heavier and sometimes savoury spirit profile.
The official range is bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or caramel colouring. Core expressions combine ex-bourbon and ex-sherry oak casks, and some are finished separately in first-fill bourbon and sherry wood before final marrying.
What makes Craigellachie distinctive?
Craigellachie's powerful, sometimes smoky or sulphury character is not the same as heavy peat smoke from Islay. The distillery's worm tubs and fermentation choices give its spirit a distinctive texture and savoury character.
