Where is Kininvie Distillery?

Kininvie is in Dufftown, Moray, in Scotland's Speyside whisky region, on the same estate as its William Grant & Sons sister distilleries Balvenie and Glenfiddich.

Kininvie's history: why a third Dufftown distillery was needed

The success of Glenfiddich and Balvenie as standalone single malts increased demand for dedicated blending malt. William Grant & Sons established Kininvie in 1990 to support its portfolio without diverting all of its neighbouring distilleries' output.

Contemporary reporting of Kininvie's 25th-anniversary release dates its first spirit to 25 June 1990, while other histories use 4 July 1990 for its early operation. Those dates should not be treated as identical without further corroboration. Its first standalone Kininvie-branded 23 Year Old went to Taiwan in 2013.

Earlier bottlings used the Hazelwood name, honouring Janet Sheed Roberts, a granddaughter of William Grant. Small batches of 17 and 23 Year Old subsequently appeared, followed in 2015 by the exceptionally limited First Drops anniversary release.

How Kininvie whisky is made

Kininvie is not simply a warehouse for Balvenie: it has its own spirit stillhouse. Industry histories describe a dedicated mash and fermentation arrangement at the neighbouring Balvenie site, with fermented wash piped to Kininvie for distillation. Its configuration is commonly described as three wash stills and six spirit stills.

Kininvie spirit has played an important role in William Grant & Sons blends and the Monkey Shoulder blended malt. The brand's precise current malt proportions are not publicly verified, so they should not be presented as fixed.

Is there a regular Kininvie core bottle range?

A current, widely stocked Kininvie core range could not be verified. The following are historically important bottlings, not evidence of continuously available products.

The 25 Year Old First Drops comprised three individual casks filled in 1990 and released in 2015. Fewer than 1,600 small bottles were produced, with launch prices near £400 for selected releases. Historic retail pricing is not an all-time auction record.

Kininvie Works: unusual Scotch whisky experiments

In 2019 Kininvie Works released three very different 50cl whiskies. One was triple-distilled single malt, one was single grain Scotch using a rye-and-barley mash, and one blended the distillery's malt and grain spirits. The latter two should not be described as single malts.

The Kininvie Works experiments were reported at £35 each on their UK launch. That price is historical, not an indication of today's availability.

Awards and recognition

Despite considerable collector interest in its limited releases, individual Kininvie competition medals could not be independently verified from original award organisers, so no specific medals or scores are claimed here.

Where can you buy Kininvie whisky?

Most historical Kininvie bottles appear through specialist retailers, the secondary market or whisky auctions. Past releases went to Taiwan, the UK, mainland Europe and the Nordic countries. We have not verified routine stock in the US, Canada or Australia. Check retailer country restrictions, delivery rules and bottle authenticity before buying.

Can you visit Kininvie Distillery?

Kininvie is not generally open to the public and has no regular bookable visitor tour. For a visit to the area, look at Glenfiddich and Balvenie's own guided experiences, and confirm timings directly with each organiser.

Historical releases include a 17 Year Old, several batches of 23 Year Old, and the 2015 First Drops 25 Year Old. Kininvie Works released experimental whiskies in 2019. A regularly stocked official core range has not been verified.

The 2019 releases tested triple-distilled single malt, rye-and-barley grain whisky and a single-distillery blend of malt and grain spirit. Not all Kininvie Works bottles are single malts.

Bottle sources: Kininvie's historical age-stated limited releases are covered in the comparison above. Kininvie Works experimental series and their separate production methods should not be conflated with a year-round single malt core range.
