The story, ownership and production of Tamdhu
Where is Tamdhu distillery?
Tamdhu is in the village of Knockando in Moray, in the Speyside region. The name comes from the Gaelic for "little dark hill", according to Wikipedia. The official site says it has used water that flows into the River Spey since it was established.
Tamdhu history
Dates differ between sources. Wikipedia says the distillery was founded in 1896 by a group of assemblers and that the first malt whisky was distilled and casked in 1897. The official site dates the founders' venture to 1897 and says the builders were enlisted in 1898, including the architect and engineer Charles C. Doig. Both are given here.
1897: a group of entrepreneurs came together to create what they hoped would be the finest whisky in the world, and secured the first shipment of sherry casks from bodegas in Spain, says the official site.
Early years: the distillery passed into the hands of Highland Distillers, and Wikipedia records a long dormancy between 1927 and 1947.
1949: the original floor maltings were modernised with Saladin boxes, a French invention that mechanises the turning of barley. At one stage 10 Saladin boxes were in use.
1970s: demand rose and the distillery expanded. The official site says four stills were added in four years. Wikipedia says capacity was tripled between 1972 and 1975, to three wash stills and three spirit stills.
2010: the distillery closed. Wikipedia says the Edrington Group, through Highland Distillers, announced its closure in April 2010.
Who owns Tamdhu?
Tamdhu is owned by Ian Macleod Distillers. Sources differ on the timing. Wikipedia, citing BBC News, says Ian Macleod bought the plant in June 2011 and restarted production in May 2013. The official site says Ian Macleod Distillers opened the distillery doors again in January 2012.
Sherry cask maturation
Tamdhu says it matures its whisky exclusively in sherry oak casks, using American and European Oloroso casks, and describes this as 100 percent sherry oak maturation from beginning to end.
Tamdhu range and releases
2018: Tamdhu 12 Year Old Single Malt was introduced, six years after the reopening, according to the official site.
2019: Tamdhu 15 Year Old Single Malt launched as a limited release.
2022: Tamdhu 18 Year Old Single Malt launched for the 125th anniversary.
Wikipedia lists a 10 Year Old, a Batch Strength non age statement release (in its second edition by early 2017), and a Limited Edition of 1,000 bottles aged in first fill sherry casks to mark the rebirth of the distillery.
2017: Tamdhu 50, from first fill European oak sherry butt cask 4678, distilled on 2 November 1963 and bottled in March 2017, with 100 bottles.
The official site also lists an Ambar 14 Year Old in its travel retail range.
ABVs were not available on the pages loaded, so none are listed.
Production
Wikipedia says the distillery has three wash stills and three spirit stills, and that it is one of the last to malt barley on site with a mechanical Saladin box. Under Highland Distillers the whisky was largely used for blends including The Famous Grouse, J and B and Cutty Sark.
Awards and people
In December 2018 Distillery Manager Sandy McIntyre was named Icons of Whisky (Scotland) Distillery Manager of the Year, according to the official site.
The River Spey and the old railway
Tamdhu works with the Spey Fishery Board to improve the River Spey and local woodland for wildlife, and recently launched its Fish Pass Project to help migratory fish reach their spawning sites.
The old Dalbeallie railway station is part of the distillery site. The official site says it was used in the Victorian era to move sherry casks from Spain to Speyside. Walkers pass through it on the Speyside Way.
