Where is Niseko Distillery?
The distillery is at 478-15 Niseko, Niseko Town, Abuta District, Hokkaido. Its website is niseko-distillery.com.
History
A February 2022 press release lists the company as established in May 2019, with Jiro Nagumo as chief executive and Takahiro Suzuki as distillery manager.
The same release says the distillery had its grand opening on 1 October 2021.
The stated goal was elegant, delicate and balanced whisky made with the soft water of Niseko Annupuri.
The distillery mainly makes malt whisky from barley malt and aimed to release its first whisky no earlier than 2024.
The press release is tagged with Hakkai Jozo, the sake maker behind Hakkaisan. A Japanese whisky dictionary visit report summary describes the distillery as operated by Hakkai Brewery and running since 2020, which differs from the 2021 opening date above.
Gin
The distillery made craft gin to sell while its whisky matured. Its ohoro GIN was sold mainly around Niseko and Hokkaido, and in February 2022 it announced a navy strength edition limited to 100 bottles at 58 percent ABV for Whisky Festival 2022 in Tokyo. The botanicals include Hokkaido grown yayachiyanagi and Japanese mint.
