History and production

People

Jon Chadwick, a former NHS chief executive, founded the distillery and is its owner. The distillery uses a 400 litre copper pot still. Jessica Tomlinson was named head distiller in 2018, when it was noted that there are very few female distillers producing whisky.

Whisky

In January 2018 The Spirits Business reported that Durham Distillery would start producing whisky that year, thought to be a first for the north east of England. The first whisky was due to be ready for consumption in 2021. The distillery also planned to move from the outskirts of Durham to a larger city centre site with visitor tours.

Durham Distillery whisky bottles and expressions

Durham announced plans to distil English whisky, but its original reporting described a planned release rather than an identified retail bottling. The photograph and history are genuine; a particular matured whisky should only be added when the label and production details can be traced to the producer.
