History and people
Black Gate was founded in 2009 by husband and wife Brian and Genise Hollingworth. Brian is in charge of whisky distilling and Genise of rum production, according to the Rum Auctioneer encyclopedia. The rum was the first of its two spirits to be made, and its debut bottling was released in 2014.
How it is made
Everything is distilled and matured on site in direct-fired pot stills. The distillery describes its spirits as made with no added sugar, no colour and no additives, in the traditional way.
Sources differ on capacity. Rum Auctioneer gives 4,000 litres a year, a quarter of it molasses-based rum. A retailer profile on Spirit of the Maker gives about 3,000 litres of whisky and about 1,000 litres of rum.
Rum Auctioneer reports that the Black Gate name is used for both the single malt whisky and the rum, and that rums are cask-aged in a variety of wood styles, often locally sourced ex-port and wine barrels.
The range
Black Gate sells an Australian single malt whisky and a pure dark rum, usually in small batch and single cask releases. A single cask release, Cask 22, was listed in a 2017 awards roundup of Australian wine and spirits.
