Where is Last Mountain Distillery?
The distillery is in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, in the Lumsden valley. Its own materials describe Lumsden as the heart of grain country.
How it started
A 2011 post on The Rum Howler Blog tells the story. Colin Schmidt, a former college hockey player who had been drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 1992, was working in the mortgage industry. His wife Meredith had a background in banking. They were looking for a business of their own in Saskatchewan, and a friend who had started a micro distillery in Colorado gave them the idea.
In August 2010 they opened Last Mountain Distillery in Lumsden, which the blog calls Saskatchewan's first micro distillery. The first product reviewed there was its hand crafted vodka.
Awards
January 2024: 620 CKRM reported that Last Mountain Distillery's Straight Wheat Whisky was named best wheat whisky at the Canadian Whisky Awards for the fifth year in a row. The awards were held in Victoria, British Columbia, and the distillery also won an award for its Wood Rye Whisky.
The Canadian Whisky Awards are described as a non profit event, with each entry judged blind by an independent panel.
The distillery's lokel platinum filtered vodka won a 2023 Bartender Spirits Award, according to that competition's winners page.
In 2026 a Reddit post and a CKOM news post reported that Last Mountain took the top prizes in the 6 to 10 year category at the Whisky Explorer Awards. We did not open the original reports, so treat this as unconfirmed.
Visiting and buying
The distillery says its spirits are available online, at the distillery in Lumsden and at select retailers across Saskatchewan. It also says it gives 10 percent of profits from its lokel range to local Saskatchewan charities each month. The official site is lastmountaindistillery.com.
