Alberta Distillers Limited: History, Whisky Range and Visitor Guide
Updated: 2 days ago
Alberta Distillers has been producing Canadian whisky in Calgary since 1946. It is particularly important to rye whiskey history because it uses large quantities of Canadian rye and has the equipment to create both light grain whisky and strongly flavoured 100% rye spirit.

Alberta Distillers Limited at a glance
The history of Alberta Distillers Limited
Frank McMahon, Max Bell and George Reifel established Alberta Distillers in 1946, building a producer close to prairie cereal agriculture and water from the Rockies. It became one of western Canada's largest whisky operations.
The brand is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits and supplies Alberta Premium and other Canadian whisky releases. Its development is tied to the wider growth of Canadian blended whisky but more recent cask-strength releases helped revive interest in its pure rye spirit.
Owners and founders
Frank McMahon, Max Bell and master distiller George Reifel; now part of Suntory Global Spirits. Current status and ownership can differ from the founding story, as noted where appropriate.
Grains, distillation and maturation
The company uses unmalted rye from Canadian farms and proprietary enzyme systems to convert grain starch into fermentable sugars. It uses a combination of continuous distillation, batch processing and kettle equipment, allowing different whisky profiles to be made at one site.
Barrels include ex-bourbon, new charred oak and used Canadian whisky casks. Alberta Premium Cask Strength is a high-strength release of 100% rye whisky; each annual batch can have a different ABV and age mix.
