The distillery is at Kungsorsvagen 60 in Arboga, Vastmanland, Sweden. Bottling also takes place on site.
History and ownership
Agitator was founded in 2015 in Arboga with the stated aim of becoming the world's most innovative whisky maker. The company behind it is Agitator Whiskymakare AB, described by the Swedish site Whisky.nu as a wholly owned subsidiary of Nordic Whisky Capital. Whisky is its main product, and the group's brands are Agitator and Blind Seal.
The distillery manager named in the Whisky.nu profile is Oskar Bruno, who has said that chestnut casks have been part of the plan since the project stage in 2014.
How the whisky is made
Agitator distils under vacuum. The lower pressure in the stills lowers the boiling point, which uses less energy. The distillery runs on district heating, and surplus heat is used to warm its warehouses. By-products go on as animal feed and biogas.
Fermentation runs for a full week, compared with the usual two to three days. The new make is filled into casks at 55% ABV rather than the 63.5% common in Scotland, and the distillery says this allows whisky to be bottled after about three years.
Maturation uses several cask types, including bourbon casks and 150 litre chestnut casks from a cooper partner in Portugal. The first Argument: Kastanj release spent two years in bourbon casks and one year in chestnut.
The range
Whisky.nu lists the core Agitator releases as The Swedish Malt (formerly Single Malt Whisky), Agitator Chestnut Cask (from the Argument series, 46% ABV), Single Malt Rok (peated, 43% ABV), The Swedish Blend, and the Blind Seal rye brand. Other releases named by the same site include Argument: Sweet Toast, Rye Rye and the Evidens series.
