Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. is based in Fort Worth, Texas. The distillery is in a renovated 1920s warehouse in the Near Southside district.

Founders and team

The company was started by Leonard Firestone and Troy Robertson, who met through their children's playgroups and each wanted to open a distillery. They left their jobs to partner, and a local magazine reported in winter 2012 that they had been working toward it for about five years. Robertson is a native Texan and Texas Tech graduate who worked in the energy business for about a decade. The head distiller named in 2012 was Rob Arnold, a Kentucky native with a biochemistry background.

First bourbon makers in North Texas

Edible Dallas and Fort Worth described it as the first bourbon maker in North Texas. The first batch was barrelled in March 2012 in 53-gallon American oak barrels to age for at least two years. A TripAdvisor caption dates the start of the project to 2012.

Texas ingredients and the Brazos yeast

The distillers said they sourced corn from North Texas or the Panhandle and used Texas soft red winter wheat in place of rye in the mash. The malted barley came from Rahr Malting. The distillery cultivated its own yeast strain, nicknamed Brazos, which Arnold isolated from a pecan nut after testing more than 100 samples at Texas Christian University.

Releases

The first product was TX Blended Whiskey, a blend of whiskies from other American distilleries, with bottle tops made from leather cuttings from M.L. Leddy's in Fort Worth. The first bottles of TX Bourbon went on sale at the distillery on 10 December, reported in early January 2017.

Ownership

A distillery guide headline reports that Pernod Ricard acquired the Texas-based Firestone & Robertson Distilling Company and its Whiskey Ranch site. The date of that deal is not confirmed in the sources used here.
