Spirit of Birmingham Distillery: Solihull, West Midlands
Spirit of Birmingham is an independent craft distillery in the West Midlands, listed at Solihull. It was set up by two siblings and makes whiskey, gin and vodka.
The founders
Business Matters reported in October 2024 that the distillery was crafted by siblings Anthony Dillon and Joanie Doyle, who grew up in the city. It was founded during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The story so far
The siblings spent about three and a half years developing their spirits using English-grown heritage varieties of barley. In the week of 2 October 2024 their first casks passed the three-year maturation mark that the law requires for whiskey. That made Spirit of Birmingham the city's first legal whiskey distillery, according to Business Matters.
Business Matters also reported that the distillery had already won four awards by that point and that the founders had worked through the licensing process for small distillers.
The range
The distillery's own products include a London Dry gin made with botanicals, some of them foraged from the garden around the distillery, and a single pot still vodka made from a combination of five grains including heritage barley, oats and rye. Check the official website for current releases.
