Fielden and The Oxford Artisan Distillery: Rye Whisky and History

Oct 26
4 min read

Updated: Oct 27

Fielden’s rye whisky grew out of The Oxford Artisan Distillery, but the present brand and the historic Oxford premises should not be treated as one unchanged operation. Fielden now identifies Adnams in Suffolk as its distilling partner.

This guide preserves the Oxford site’s history while explaining the current supply chain. The photograph is an archive view of Oxford’s copper stills, not an image of Fielden’s present distillation at Adnams.

From Oxford Artisan to Fielden

The Oxford Artisan Distillery became known for its use of heritage grain and its distinctive copper equipment. The Fielden brand followed in 2024, carrying the grain-focused approach into a broader rye-whisky range.

The original Oxford operation closed in May 2024, according to the later reopening report published by The Gin Guild. That report describes plans for The Oxford Artisan Distillery to return in 2027. A planned reopening must not be confused with an already available visitor experience or with Fielden’s current production arrangements.

People and ownership

Fielden’s current FAQ records the business’s move into new ownership under GHF in 2025. The useful practical point for readers is that its whisky is now made through a partner arrangement rather than an operating Fielden-owned Oxford stillhouse.

The separate Oxford revival concerns the historic premises and equipment. Whisky Clan retains the existing directory record and address for that historic site, rather than silently moving its map identity to Suffolk.

Production and maturation

Fielden describes a grain-led process using heritage varieties, with malting at Warminster and distillation at Adnams. Maturation is associated with its Cask House in the Chilterns. This is a distributed production chain rather than a claim that all work happens in Oxford.

The producer describes rye as the majority grain in its recipe. Its current FAQ does not claim that the business holds the earlier operation’s B Corp or organic certifications. Farming methods, a certification and the legal category on a bottle are separate matters and should be checked independently.

Bottles and release status

Read the brand and release name on each label. A harvest year does not automatically supply a whisky’s age statement.

Fielden Rye Whisky

The core rye expression. The producer’s flavour description emphasises fruit, floral and cereal-pastry notes with peppery spice; this is an attributed summary, not a Whisky Clan review.

Fielden Rye Whisky bottle; a brand expression, not evidence of distillation at the former Oxford site.

Fielden Harvest editions

Harvest names identify a particular release or grain story. Do not calculate an age from a harvest date without the relevant distillation and bottling evidence.

Fielden Hazybower

A named limited release listed by the producer. A sold-out store listing is not proof that the expression never existed or that every retailer has no stock.

Milestones and recognition

The significant developments are the launch of Fielden, the changed distilling arrangements and the separately reported Oxford revival. Historical awards or certifications attached to an earlier business should not automatically be applied to every current release.

Visiting Fielden and Oxford

Do not travel to Cheney Lane expecting a current Fielden distillery tour on the strength of an old Oxford listing. The official Fielden FAQ and the 2026 Oxford reopening report describe different operations.

A future Oxford opening remains a plan until the operator publishes actual visitor dates. A visit to Adnams is also a separate booking with a separate producer, not automatically a tour of a Fielden-owned distillery.

These existing Whisky Clan guides offer regional or production context. They are not all immediate neighbours, and their inclusion does not imply current public tour availability.

Frequently asked questions

Its current FAQ identifies Adnams as the distilling partner and says Fielden does not have its own distillery.

The CMS record also represents The Oxford Artisan Distillery’s historic physical site. Moving that identity would obscure its history.

No. Harvest, distillation, bottling and labelled age are different pieces of information.

A 2027 reopening has been reported, but current tours should not be inferred from that plan. Confirm directly with the relevant operator.
