Founder and origins
The distillery was founded in 2008 by Dr Bryan Nolt, described by Whisky Magazine as a doctor turned distiller. The distillery's own site says it came online in 2008 and released its first vodka and bourbon three years later. In a November 2025 interview Nolt said it was officially founded in 2008 though he started in 2007, and that whiskey releases began in 2011.
Whisky.com gives the altitude as 2,926 metres. The title of highest distillery is the distillery's own and Whisky.com's wording is that it is considered the world's highest, so we present it as a claim.
Range and recognition
The distillery says Breckenridge Bourbon is one of the most highly awarded craft bourbons in the US. Its site lists wins including World's Best Finished Bourbon for the Port Cask Finish at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards, World's Best Blended Whiskey for Breckenridge High Proof in 2023, ten wins as Best American Blended at the World Whiskies Awards, and four New York International Spirits Competition titles as Colorado Distillery of the Year. It also makes gin, vodka and other spirits, and has an official bourbon partnership with the Denver Broncos.
Visiting
The distillery site lists a restaurant and retail shop at 1925 Airport Road in Breckenridge, plus a Main Street tasting room at 137 S Main Street, and a free shuttle within town limits. Hours change, so check the website.
