History

According to the Irish Examiner (June 2019), Sam and Maud Black founded Blacks Brewery in 2013. Sam Black has said the brewing began as a hobby, after Maud gave him a home brewing kit as a Valentine's Day present. A distillery was added to the site in 2015, and the business began producing Irish craft spirits.

What they make

  • Craft beer, from the original brewery

  • Gin

  • Rum, described by the Irish Examiner in 2019 as Ireland's first and only rum at the time

  • Pot still Irish whiskey, laid down in casks from January 2020 according to the 2019 plan

The Whiskey Founders Club

In 2019 the company launched the Blacks Whiskey Founders Club, a five year cask programme for the first 500 members. Casks started from 6,500 euro and were expected to yield around 400 bottles of the distillery's own pot still single malt Irish whiskey. After five years, members could bottle the whiskey or sell the cask back to the distillery under a minimum return stated by the company. The company said it had invested in two copper stills for the project, and that production was due to start in January 2020.

Sales and visits

The Irish Examiner reported that Blacks was already selling into Australia and the United States in 2019. The site in Kinsale welcomes visitors for brewery and distillery tours.
