The story, ownership and production of BenRiach
John Duff and the Puggy
BenRiach was established by John Duff next to his Longmorn distillery. A private railway with a steam locomotive called the Puggy joined the two, carrying coal, barley, peat and barrels.
Closure and maltings
Soon after the railway opened in 1900, the distillery stopped production following the bankruptcy of the buyer Pattisons Ltd. Only the maltings stayed in use, producing malt for Longmorn. BenRiach did not produce spirit again until 1965, when Glenlivet Distillers Ltd reopened it.
Ownership timeline
1965: reopened by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd
1978: Seagrams took over
2001: Seagrams became part of Pernod Ricard, and BenRiach ran for just three months a year
2004: bought by the independent BenRiach Distillery Company Limited, formed by Geoff Bell, Wayne Keswetter and Billy Walker
2008: the company acquired GlenDronach
2013: it acquired Glenglassaugh
2016: sold to Brown-Forman on 1 June
How BenRiach works today
The distillery says it seeks out casks from around the world and fills them with one of its three spirit styles, classic, peated or triple distilled. It also highlights Warehouse 13 and a malting season that honours historic craft. News on its site in January 2024 covered the return of The Sixteen and 40 year old malts.
