History

Planning permission came in 2002 under Sir Iain Noble. After his death the project was acquired by Mossburn Distillers. Building began in 2014 and finished in 2017 inside a converted farm steading. A gap of 187 years separates Talisker's opening from Skye's next licensed distillery, as The Single Cask points out.

In 2019 the distillery adopted a baby goat called Goaty as its official mascot. In 2021 two bottles of the first whisky were auctioned for charity, and in 2022 some of the whisky was selected for preservation by the National Museum of Scotland.

House style

The official site says Torabhaig loves exploring subtle, elegant peat inspired by its surroundings and community. Its releases are described as peated.

The Legacy Series

The distillery is capturing its house style in a run of limited Legacy Series chapters, shown on the official site as:

  • Chapter 1: 2017

  • Chapter 2: Allt Gleann, named after a burn that feeds the distillery, released summer 2021 at 46% ABV, plus a Batch Strength version

  • Chapter 3: Cnoc na Moine

  • Chapter 4: Sound of Sleat, plus a Batch Strength version

  • Taigh, a further release listed on the site

The site also lists a new Distillers' Series, where team members shape their own releases. The first two are Iona's First Edition and Niall's First Edition. Other ranges listed include the Reserve Series, Caisteal Chamuis and Mossburn Whisky. Prices seen on the home page ran from 50 to 83 pounds for the core releases and 75 pounds for the Distillers' Series, but check before publishing.

The people

The official news pages mention Whiskymaker Neil MacLeod Mathieson and Alan Philp, who oversees production and warehousing after more than seven years with the Mossburn and Torabhaig family. A news post also says the distillery's warehouses are now complete.

Visiting

The official site offers bookable tours, a distillery cafe and a club with reserve bottlings. The distillery has a visitor centre at Teangue. Check the Visit Us page for current tour times and prices.
