Updated: 4 days ago
Crofter and entrepreneur Angus MacMillan developed Benbecula Distillery as an island enterprise using local grain and maritime heritage. The project converted an industrial building on Gramsdale into a landmark malt distillery with a glass-walled lighthouse-style extension.
Whisky spirit was first produced in 2024. The project recruited master distiller Brendan McCarron and aims to create a single malt deeply connected to the island's bere barley, crofting and locally harvested peat.

The people behind the distillery
Founder Angus MacMillan and master distiller Brendan McCarron. Changes to current ownership or roles should be confirmed directly with the company.
Production and whisky maturation
The distillery has revived the use of bere barley grown on island crofts with soil enriched by seaweed. Its malting process involves heather blended into peat as a kiln fuel, intended to create a lightly peated floral and maritime house style.
New make spirit is produced in custom-made copper pot stills and filled into bourbon and sherry casks. The producer describes its desired future whisky style, but the actual first mature bottles and tasting verdicts remain subject to release.
Whisky releases and bottle range
This guide separates mature whisky distilled at this facility, where it exists, from new-make spirit or bottles independently sourced from other distilleries. A bottle with a distillery's brand name does not always mean the liquid was made there.
Benbecula new make spirit
Distilled since 2024 and maturing in oak; not yet evidence of an independently reviewed mature whisky.
Future Benbecula Single Malt
Island-produced Scotch malt planned when the casks have matured sufficiently; no confirmed finished bottle in the research checked.
No genuine bottled mature whisky distilled at this new site was verified in the October 2026 research, so no unrelated bottle image has been used.
Awards and notable milestones
A 2024 first distillation, restoration of the industrial site and construction of the lighthouse stillhouse are its chief verified milestones. Awards should not be given to unbottled mature whisky.
