History
In 1782 Walter Teeling established a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties, then a centre of Dublin distilling. It was later bought by a larger neighbour, William Jameson and Co., which closed in 1923. The last of the original Dublin distilleries closed in 1976.
John Teeling, a descendant of Walter, founded Cooley Distillery in County Louth in 1987. After Cooley was sold to Beam in 2011, his sons Jack and Stephen negotiated the purchase of 16,000 casks of aged whiskey and launched Teeling Whiskey in 2012. In 2015 they opened the new distillery in Newmarket Square, close to the original site. In December 2023 Bacardi Limited took majority control.
How it is made
The distillery has three pot stills: a 15,000 litre wash still, a 10,000 litre intermediate still and a 9,000 litre spirit still. Capacity is 500,000 litres a year. The brand symbol is a phoenix rising from a pot still.
The range
Teeling bottlings are 46% ABV and non-chill filtered. Styles include:
Teeling Small Batch, finished in ex-rum barrels
Teeling Single Grain, matured in Californian cabernet sauvignon barrels
Teeling Single Malt, vatted from whiskey finished in five wine cask types
Teeling Single Pot Still, from a mash bill of 50% malted and 50% unmalted barley
Teeling Spirit of Dublin, a poitin at 50 to 52.5% ABV
Awards
At the 2016 World Whiskies Awards, Teeling won Best Irish Single Malt (24 Year Old), Best Irish Single Malt no age statement and Best Irish Single Grain.

Newer facts and the family story
Teeling is a name with two lives. In the eighteenth century it belonged to Walter Teeling and the Marrowbone Lane distillery in the Liberties. In the modern era it belongs to the sons of John Teeling, the academic turned distiller who founded Cooley in County Louth in 1987 and sold it to Beam for about US$95 million in 2011. A 2026 LegacyDram profile describes the new Dublin distillery as funded in part by that sale, and records that the Dublin tourism line for it is the first new whiskey distillery in the city in over 125 years, with the previous one on Jones Road dating to the 1870s.
Who owns Teeling now
Irish Whiskey Magazine reported on 23 June 2026 that Bacardi has taken full ownership of Teeling Irish Whiskey. It describes the path as a minority stake in 2017, a majority stake in 2022 and full ownership as of that day. An earlier Italian trade report from December 2023 also describes Bacardi taking majority control, and the existing text on this page gives December 2023 for the majority. Sources disagree on that date, so treat the 2022 and 2023 dates with care. The June 2026 full ownership report is the most recent.

Recent releases
Irish Whiskey Magazine lists the fourth release in the Wonders of Wood series, announced on International Irish Whiskey Day on 3 March 2026 and built around rare Carpathian oak. In September 2026 it also reported a limited edition Teeling Small Batch with a Santa Teresa 1796 rum cask finish, part of the Small Batch Collaborations series. The same coverage names Alex Chasko as Master Distiller and Blender.
Why it matters to Irish whiskey
When Cooley opened in 1987, two companies made all Irish whiskey, Irish Distillers at Midleton and Bushmills in County Antrim. LegacyDram puts the island count at more than forty working distilleries by 2026, while Stories and Sips counted 50 operating distilleries in September 2024. The Teeling name sits at the start and the end of that story.

2026 verified IWSC bottle awards
The International Wine & Spirit Competition reported a 33 Year Old Teeling single malt among Irish whiskey's standout top medals in its 2026 results. A 33-year-old limited expression should not be treated as a regular bottle found in every market; for current availability, check Teeling and its official distributors.
