Opening in 2019

Dublin Live reported on 20 February 2019 that the distillery became the 22nd operational Irish whiskey distillery on the island on the day it announced the start of distillation. The visitor centre opened at the same time, with room for up to 80,000 visitors a year, and was the fourth distillery visitor centre in Dublin city centre. Head Distiller Darryl McNally led the team.

Ownership and investment

Dublin Live said the distillery is owned by Quintessential Brands, an independent international spirits group. In July 2017 TheTaste.ie reported that Stock Spirits Group had acquired 25 per cent of Quintessential Brands Irish Whiskey, with an announced total investment of 28 million euro, and that a large part would go to completing and fitting out the Dublin 8 distillery. That article expected the doors to open in summer 2018, and the actual start came in February 2019.

The early range

  • The Dublin Liberties Oak Devil: an extra aged blend of single malt and grain whiskey, non-chill filtered and bottled at 46 per cent (2017 report).

  • The Dublin Liberties Copper Alley: a 10 year old single malt aged in bourbon casks and finished for six months in 30 year old Oloroso sherry casks (2017 report).

Opening and setting

The Whiskey Wash reported in March 2019 that the Dublin Liberties Distillery had opened in Dublin's Liberties district after a build of around a year, at a stated cost of 10 million euros. The project renovated a 400 year old building, keeping its original architecture and facade, and has a natural spring water source on site.

  • Owner: Quintessential Brands, whose Irish whiskey portfolio includes The Dubliner and The Dublin Liberties

  • On site: a cocktail bar, tours and a view of how the whiskey is made

Sources and gaps

  • Sources: Dublin Live, 20 February 2019; TheTaste.ie, 17 July 2017.

  • Gaps: both sources are several years old. Current ownership, stills, range, visitor hours and prices need checking against the official site before publishing. This is a thin draft.
