History
The distillery started production in 2013 and first made gin. The first whisky was distilled in October 2013. The site had an earlier distillery founded by William White in 1798, which became disused.
In 2019 Douglas Laing & Co acquired the distillery and doubled its production capacity. The first single malt under the new owner, The Heart, was released in 2022.
The Strathearn Gin and Heather Rose Gin brand names stayed with the previous directors. In 2025 Douglas Laing began making its own Teasmith gin there, flavoured with Sri Lankan tea leaves.
Production
The equipment is a stainless steel mash tun, two stainless steel washbacks and two stills. The alembic stills were designed for the Portuguese sherry industry. The distillery matures in small 50 litre casks.
Author Charles Maclean states that Strathearn probably has the longest fermentation of any distillery, at 96 hours. The distillery also blends honey for a honey based whisky.
From the official site
The Strathearn site calls it Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, produced in small batches without colouring or chill filtration, and shows Strathearn Single Malt Batch 02 as the current release. The site footer carries a Douglas Laing copyright and its tagline describes Strathearn as one of Scotland's smallest distilleries.
Ownership
Douglas Laing & Co acquired Strathearn Distillery in 2019. The distillery's own news page records the release of Strathearn Highland Single Malt Batch 03 on 5 August 2026.
