History of 8 Doors Distillery

Kerry and Derek Campbell started planning their dream distillery in 2020. They opened the site in September 2022, describing 8 Doors as the most northerly whisky distillery on the mainland of the United Kingdom.

The name refers to a John O'Groats legend: Jan de Groot supposedly built an eight-sided house with eight doors and an eight-sided table so his seven sons could meet without arguments over precedence. Veteran distiller John Ramsay has shared production and maturation advice.

How the whisky is made

The distillery makes its own new-make spirit from malted barley using copper pot stills and fills casks for future single malt Scotch whisky. Cask choice and patient maturation form part of the distillery's long-term plan.

The Seven Sons bottles are a different product: whisky sourced from other Scottish distilleries, sometimes as individual casks or small batches, then independently selected and bottled by the team. The whisky can be older than 8 Doors itself precisely because it was distilled elsewhere.

Awards and milestones

The producer reports an IWSC Gold in 2025 for a Seven Sons blend. That accolade belongs to the independently bottled expression, not a future 8 Doors-distilled whisky.
