The story of Deanston
Richard Arkwright built the mill in 1785, and it grew into a large industrial village. ScotchWhisky.com says it had what was claimed to be the largest water wheel in Europe. The Single Cask adds that the village issued its own currency in 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars and installed gas lighting in 1813. Turbines replaced the water wheel in 1949 and are still generating electricity.
Weaving continued until the mid 1960s. The two sources differ on the details: ScotchWhisky.com says the buildings were bought by Brodie Hepburn in 1964 and production started in 1969, while The Single Cask says the mill closed in 1965 and distilling began in October 1966 after a nine month refit. Either way, the whisky business started in the second half of the 1960s.
The first Deanston single malt, named Bannockburn, came in 1971, and Invergordon Distillers bought the company in 1972. The first Deanston single malt release followed in 1974. Poor trade closed the distillery in 1982. Burn Stewart bought it for £2.1 million in 1990 and it reopened a year later. The visitor centre opened in 2012.
Who owns Deanston now?
Deanston belongs to CVH Spirits, established in 2023 after Heineken's acquisition of Distell. CVH is independent and majority owned by Remgro. Historic sources naming Distell describe the ownership structure before this transition.
How Deanston is made
Mashing: traditional open topped cast iron mash tun, 10.52 tonnes of grist
Fermentation: 50 to 100 hours, using a liquid M type yeast
Distillation: four medium bulbous stills, with wash stills charged at 15,000 litres
New make strength: 69% ABV; filling strength 63.5%
Power: hydro turbines on the River Teith, with surplus electricity sold to the National Grid
Maturation: about 35,000 casks on site, in dunnage and racked storage. The Single Cask says the old weaving sheds are used as vaulted warehouses
Bottling: non chill filtered, with no added colour
Deanston also makes an organic whisky from organic barley, and ScotchWhisky.com says the same distillery produces the Glen Ardoch single malt brand.
