History of Spreewood Distillers (Stork Club)

The whisky distillery in Schlepzig dates to the early 2000s and occupies a location within the Spreewald biosphere reserve, south of Berlin. The historic site was not founded by the current ownership team in 2016.

Steffen Lohr, Sebastian Brack and Bastian Heuser travelled to Schlepzig to buy a whisky cask and instead purchased the distillery in 2016. After renovation and new equipment, they developed specialist rye whisky production under the Stork Club name, beginning in 2017.

People and ownership

People associated with the distillery’s history include Steffen Lohr, Sebastian Brack and Bastian Heuser. Names refer to documented roles during the venture and should not be taken as an assertion about unchanged present ownership.

Whisky production and maturation

Stork Club obtains rye from Brandenburg farms, grinds it on site, mashes it and ferments for approximately five days. This grain choice distinguishes the operation from German distilleries chiefly producing barley single malt.

The distillery uses copper hybrid stills combining pot and column features. Different maturation and bottling strengths shape its Straight Rye, Full Proof and limited releases.

Spreewood Distillers (Stork Club) whisky bottles and releases

The bottle range below distinguishes core expressions from limited or historically significant releases where sources permit. Whisky Clan has not personally tasted these bottles for this guide.

The recognisable straight rye whiskey expression.

Stork Club Full Proof Rye Whiskey

A stronger rye expression, including a 55% ABV bottling.

Stork Club Smoky Rye Whiskey

A smokier rye variant.

Stork Club limited releases

Special cask and limited rye expressions.
