The name and the family behind it

The name comes from Slyrse, the old Bavarian name for the Schliersee and the monastery of the same name. The distillery is controlled by the Stetter family, which also runs a schnapps distillery that was previously used to distil Slyrs whisky.

History: founded in 1999

The distillery in the Neuhaus district was founded in 1999 by Florian Stetter, who trained as a brewer and maltster. Whisky has to be stored by law for three years, and production was small, so a limited edition of 100,000 bottles was first sold and distributed locally.

In 2011 between 40,000 and 50,000 people visited the distillery. As of 2011 it was the largest whisky distillery in Germany.

A warehouse at 1,501 metres

In December 2014 a newly built warehouse was opened on the Stümpfling mountain at an altitude of 1,501 metres. It holds up to 40 barrels of 225 litres. The idea is that the special climate there gives the whisky a different character from whisky stored in the valley.

Style and awards

Andrea Stetter, one of the managing directors, says Slyrs is fundamentally different from Scotch and can be drunk from three years old. In 2014 the Slyrs Sherry Edition No 1 won the Gold Award for Best European Single Malt at Whisky Magazine's World Whiskies Awards.
