Scilly Isles Distillery: St Mary's, Isles of Scilly
Scilly Spirit, listed here as Scilly Isles Distillery, is a gin and whisky distillery in Old Town on St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly, off the south-west tip of England.
The people
The distillery was founded by Arthur and Hilary Miller. The Spirits Business reported that in May 2024 they put the distillery up for sale at an asking price of 1.5 million pounds.
The first Isles of Scilly whisky
In November 2024 the distillery released Island Whisky, described as the first single malt ever made on the Isles of Scilly. The Spirits Business reported that the first cask was filled on 2 November, the same calendar date as the 1707 loss of HMS Association and the other Royal Navy ships off the islands under Sir Cloudesley Shovell. The whisky pays tribute to that event.
The first cask was medium toasted new European oak and the whisky is bottled at 46% ABV. Water from the Atlantic Ocean is used in its production. The first batch was 92 bottles of 70cl at 120 pounds each, and it sold out in a pre-sale to customers on a waiting list. A second batch in a bourbon cask was planned for April 2025.
The sale
In November 2024 Arthur Miller told The Spirits Business that there had been no serious responses to the sale announcement. He said the business would carry on growing its brand in the UK and in export markets, and would consider any approach on its merits. Check the official website for the current position.
