Rugen Distillery: Swiss Mountain Whisky, Interlaken and Visitor Guide

Rugen Distillery brings whisky into the Rugenbräu brewing complex at Matten bei Interlaken. Its Swiss Mountain range combines conventional oak maturation with unusual locations, most famously casks associated with the Jungfraujoch.

The brewery, the first whisky release and the construction of the on-site distillery are separate milestones. Understanding that sequence helps prevent an older company date from being mistaken for the start of whisky distillation at the current plant.

History and development

Rugenbräu’s longstanding brewing business gave the company experience in grain processing and fermentation before whisky joined the portfolio. The producer dates its first beer spirit to 1999 and the launch of Swiss Mountain single malt to 2008.

A contemporary account of the December 2010 opening explains that earlier spirit had been distilled outside the brewery. The dedicated distillery installed above the brewhouse brought the process under the same roof. That distinction is more precise than calling 2008 the opening date of the current still house.

The site’s rock cellar predates the whisky programme by more than a century. It is a maturation environment, not evidence that nineteenth-century Rugenbräu whisky was produced there.

People, ownership and identity

Rugen Distillery is part of Rugenbräu AG rather than an unrelated producer sharing the town’s name. The current production page identifies Ludwig Stranzky in a combined production and master-distiller role.

Older interviews feature earlier distillers. Their contributions remain part of the history, but this guide does not carry a historical job title forward as though it had been freshly confirmed.

Production and the whisky connection

The current producer account connects brewing knowledge with malt-whisky production and describes substantial use of Oloroso sherry casks in the Rugen rock cellar. The still house is positioned above the brewery, giving the complex a distinctive glass-fronted arrangement.

Ice Label illustrates why edition-specific documentation matters. The 2026 bottling is 15 years old: four years in the rock cellar followed by eleven in an ice grotto at the Jungfraujoch. Its 53.6% strength and 950-bottle outturn belong to that edition, not to every bottle ever called Ice Label.

Other releases use different cask treatment. Master Distiller Armagnac 2026 is a separate 15-year-old single cask, not the same whisky as Ice Label despite sharing an age statement.

Whisky range and release identities

Keep the annual edition and cask identity when researching Swiss Mountain bottles. The range also includes non-whisky spirits and liqueurs, which must not be added as malt whisky.

Swiss Mountain Single Malt Classic

Age not established for this record; 46% ABV. Oloroso sherry casks. No age inferred from the brand’s first-release date.

Swiss Mountain Ice Label 2026 — 15 Years

15 years; 53.6% ABV. Oloroso sherry cask; four years rock cellar and eleven years Jungfraujoch ice grotto. Exact 2026 edition, 950 bottles. Do not copy older Ice Label ages or strengths.

Swiss Mountain Master Distiller Armagnac 2026 — Cask 463

15 years; 59.2% ABV. Oak maturation then Armagnac cask; cask 463. Exact 2026 edition, 365 bottles. Producer states five years in oak before Armagnac treatment; do not infer a generic range recipe.

Milestones and recognition

The portfolio lists awards achieved by Swiss Mountain releases over several years. Those historic results are not all awards for the 2026 edition currently shown on the same page. This guide preserves edition and year rather than assigning a composite trophy record to one bottle.
