History of Langatun Distillery

Langatun traces its roots to the Baumberger family’s brewing and distilling heritage around Langenthal. In the modern era Hans Baumberger III took up that tradition and started whisky production after Swiss grain distillation rules changed.

The first new make spirit was produced in 2005. The inaugural three-year-old Olde Deer release arrived in 2008, followed by the Old Deer, Old Bear and Gold Bee classics in 2011. Production moved in 2014 to the protected historic Kornhaus building in Aarwangen, while maturation also continued in Langenthal.

People and ownership

People associated with the distillery’s history include Hans Baumberger III and the Baumberger family. Names refer to documented roles during the venture and should not be taken as an assertion about unchanged present ownership.

Whisky production and maturation

Langatun is known for unpeated malt and triple distillation in expressions such as Old Deer. Fermentation using stout yeast and copper distillation contribute to the new spirit character.

Old Deer is matured in a combination of former sherry and Chardonnay wine casks. The producer has listed both 40% and 46% versions, so a particular bottle’s label is more precise than a blanket statement about the range.

Langatun Distillery whisky bottles and releases

The bottle range below distinguishes core expressions from limited or historically significant releases where sources permit. Whisky Clan has not personally tasted these bottles for this guide.

Old Deer Classic

Unpeated single malt, with sherry and Chardonnay cask maturation; 40% and 46% bottlings are documented.

Old Bear

A different expression within the historic Classics range.

Gold Bee

Another Langatun Classics range expression.

Special single casks

Small individual cask releases whose ages and strengths vary.
