Nant Distillery: History, Whisky Range and Visitor Guide

Nant was a pioneering Tasmanian single malt operation at the restored Nant Estate mill in Bothwell. Its distinctive historical whisky bottles and the nineteenth-century watermill are part of Tasmania's whisky renaissance, but the original Nant business had financial and ownership problems, so its old tours and bottles should be treated as historical rather than assumed current.

The history of Nant Distillery

The distillery developed around the heritage watermill on a former Tasmanian estate and used water associated with the Clyde River. The project pioneered luxury single malt from the state's highlands.

Financial difficulties and later changes of ownership complicated the original business, including controversial cask investment arrangements. Different subsequent operators and bottlings are not necessarily products of the original Nant management.

Owners and founders

Nant Whisky founding operation; later assets acquired by Lark and other operators. Current status and ownership can differ from the founding story, as noted where appropriate.

Grains, distillation and maturation

Whisky at Nant used Tasmanian barley, pot distillation and oak maturation. The house range was often marketed as individual single casks, including bourbon, sherry and port casks.

The specific Bourbon Cask Strength bottle pictured is labelled at 63% ABV. Different NANT single casks have been bottled at lower strength, so do not assume a universal ABV.

Awards and key milestones

The distillery's role in early Tasmanian whisky and subsequent financial controversies are more relevant than presenting an unverified current award record.
