Ludlow Distillery: Shropshire Single Malt Whisky and Visitor Guide

5 min read

Ludlow Distillery combines a Shropshire spirits business with a visitor centre at Ludlow Farmshop, north of the town. Gin is an important part of its identity, but its catalogue also includes single malt whisky with distinct cask treatments.

The archive production photograph above predates the visitor centre that opened in 2023. Use the current Bromfield address when planning a visit rather than assuming an older stillhouse picture shows today's public entrance.

Ludlow's modern distilling story

Shaun Ward's Ludlow gin business began in 2018. The producer's own story describes a hands-on approach to spirit-making, drawing on the identity and hospitality of the town. Its whisky line sits within a broader catalogue that also includes gin, vodka and liqueurs.

The business expanded its visitor offering with a new distillery and visitor centre at Ludlow Farmshop in 2023. Contemporary opening coverage describes the move as a way to bring production and the visitor experience together.

Those dates are not interchangeable with the age printed on a whisky bottle. A three-year-old expression describes the spirit's maturation, while 2018 and 2023 refer to business and site milestones.

Who is behind Ludlow Distillery?

Shaun Ward is identified by the producer as its founder and distiller. The current website names Shropshire Hills Distillery Limited as the operating company.

The visitor experience presents several spirits, so it is worth specifying an interest in whisky when booking. A gin-making class and a whisky-focused tasting are not necessarily the same programme.

Small-scale copper distillation and cask finishing

The whisky pages describe English barley alongside Scottish peated malt in the production story, with a long fermentation and a small German copper hybrid still. The producer's cask programme also describes wood-fired operation.

Its general production account and individual product descriptions do not use identical language about the number of distillations. This guide therefore does not convert four rectifying plates into a claim that every release passes through four separate stills.

Oak is a clearer distinction between the expressions. The official range includes bourbon-matured whisky, sherry and port treatments, and other special casks. Specifications should be read at bottle level rather than assuming one recipe for the whole range.

Whisky range and documented expressions

Ludlow's catalogue includes numbered single malt expressions and special cask releases. Miniatures and gift packaging are not automatically different whiskies. The examples below are documented releases, not a promise of current stock.

Ludlow Distiller's Cut, No.1

Ludlow Single Malt English Whisky Distiller's Cut No.1 labelled bottle

Bottle detail

Ludlow Distiller's Cut, No.1

Identity and strength

English single malt; 70cl. The photographed label identifies the 42% ABV expression.

Maturation

Consult the current producer listing and label for the precise batch. Do not transfer a later cask finish from another numbered release.

Tasting-note context

The producer describes a sweet malt profile with honeyed and toffee-like elements and a touch of smoke.

Ludlow Single Malt, Pedro Ximénez Cask

Bottle detail

Ludlow Single Malt, Pedro Ximénez Cask

Identity and strength

The producer documents a three-year-old single malt in a 70cl bottle. Verify the current bottle's strength and edition.

Maturation

A Pedro Ximénez sherry treatment distinguishes this release from the Distiller's Cut.

Tasting-note context

This is producer-documented maturation, not a personal Whisky Clan tasting. The page associates this whisky with a 2024 Great British Food Awards bronze result.

Ludlow Single Malt, Ruby Cask

Bottle detail

Ludlow Single Malt, Ruby Cask

Identity and strength

57% ABV; 70cl. A stronger single-cask release, distinct from the 42% house-strength bottles.

Maturation

The producer describes three years in bourbon wood followed by ruby-port finishing. That does not establish a more precise final age.

Tasting-note context

Producer descriptors, paraphrased: dark dried fruit and warm spice, with a fruity, lingering finish.

Cask releases and recognition

The wider range includes Oloroso, Islay-whisky-cask and other treatments. These deserve separate release checks instead of copying age, strength or flavour from one bottle to another.

The Pedro Ximénez product page reports bronze recognition at the Great British Food Awards in 2024. That producer-supplied result belongs to the named whisky; it is not a blanket award for every bottle or an independent Whisky Clan rating.

Visiting Ludlow Distillery at Bromfield

The current visitor centre is at Ludlow Farmshop, about two miles north of Ludlow on the A49. The official page advertises a shop and bar, with scheduled tours and other experiences.

A standard tour covers the wider spirits operation rather than whisky alone. Confirm the timetable, booking terms and accessibility directly. Where a session includes several spirit categories, check what will be covered before booking rather than expecting an exclusively single malt visit.

Henstone provides another Shropshire comparison. The other guides extend the journey into the Midlands, Wales and Derbyshire; they are not all neighbouring distilleries.
