Where is In the Welsh Wind?
The distillery is at the Gogerddan Arms, Tan-y-groes, Cardigan, Ceredigion, West Wales, SA43 2HP, on a cliff top overlooking Cardigan Bay. It was converted from a cow shed.
The founders
The Sauce magazine, in a 2023 piece produced in collaboration with the distillery, says teacher Ellen Wakelam and baker Alex Jungmayr were working in the Midlands when they decided to move back to West Wales. They walked the outline of Wales to work out their next move, and Alex's gluten intolerance ended their baking plans. After visiting craft distilleries in Scotland they set up the distillery. The article gives conflicting dates for this, so we have not stated a founding year.
Grain to glass Welsh whisky
The Sauce says In the Welsh Wind is the only distillery in Wales producing 100 percent grain to glass single malt Welsh whisky.
All the barley comes from surrounding fields, within 10 miles and often within yards of the stills, per the same article.
Production from malting to maturation, plus bottling and labelling, is said to take place in Wales, with water drawn from a bore hole on the distillery grounds.
At the time of the article the distillery was selling 30 litre casks of new make spirit, with its own bottle releases expected from 2025.
Gin and other spirits
The Signature Style gin won a gold medal at the Global Gin Masters 2021, and its label won the World Gin Awards 2021 gold medal for Best Gin Label Design, according to The Sauce. The distillery also makes the Eccentric range of white label spirits, including Pembrokeshire Pinky and a Japanese inspired gin called Noto, plus a three grain vodka, an island rum and a Welsh cask vinegar. It runs tours and a gin making experience in its Gin Lab. Official site: inthewelshwind.co.uk.
