A first for North America

The distillery says that in 1990 Glenora became North America's first single malt whisky distillery, drawing on Scottish traditions carried to Cape Breton by Highland settlers two centuries earlier. Its site also calls it Canada's first single malt whisky distillery and the home of Glen Breton Rare.

The Battle of the Glen

Glenora says it won what it calls the Battle of the Glen, a decade-long legal fight to use the word Glen in its name. It says Cape Breton's Gaelic heritage is real, not borrowed. The dates of the fight and the other party are not given on the page we read.

Water, warehouses and the whisky

The distillery says it uses water from MacLellan's Brook, which flows through the Cape Breton Highlands, and ages whisky in warehouses set in its own apple orchard, steps from the inn.

Its featured Glen Breton Rare 10 Year Old is a Canadian single malt aged in American oak at 43% ABV. The site also lists a 21 year old, which it says took gold at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards.

Visiting

Glenora offers distillery tours, tastings, a pub with live Celtic music, a dining room and rooms and cabins. The site says it is open from late May to late October. The address is 13727 Highway 19, Glenville, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Check the official site for current hours.

North America's first single malt distillery

The distillery's own history page says it was the dream of Bruce Jardine, founder of Glenora Distillery on Cape Breton Island, who sought the expertise of Bowmore Distillers in Scotland for production training and for sourcing copper pot stills and a mash tun. It describes itself as North America's first single malt whisky distillery.

  • Construction: completed in 1990, with initial production of 20 barrels

  • Ingredients: barley, yeast and water, with water from MacLellan's Brook in the Mabou Highlands

  • Ownership: Glenora and its maturing whisky were bought in 1994 by its present owners

  • First bottling: Glen Breton Rare was released in November 2000, with the first 500 bottles numbered and signed

  • Anniversaries: a 25 year old release in 2015 and a 30 year old called Triginta in 2020

Sources and gaps

Gaps: founder, who opposed the use of Glen and the dates, stills, capacity and the Our History page were not read. Slug and cover image to be set by hand.
