Where is Balblair distillery?
Balblair Distillery, Edderton, Ross-shire, IV19 1LB, on the south shore of the Dornoch Firth. ScotchWhisky.com classes it as Highland single malt.
Balblair history
John Ross founded Balblair in 1790 at Edderton. The Ross family ran it for its first century. In 1894 Inverness wine merchant Alexander Cowan bought it and built a new still house, mash house, kiln and barns. The distillery was moved about half a mile north in 1895 to sit beside the new railway line, per ScotchWhisky.com's timeline. Its history text gives 1872 for the move, and The Single Cask credits the 1894 rebuild to architect Charles Doig. Sources therefore differ on exact dates.
Hard times followed. Balblair was mothballed in 1911, and the last whisky in its warehouses was sold in 1932. The army commandeered it in 1939. In 1948 Robert 'Bertie' Cumming, owner of Old Pulteney, bought it for £48,000, and production restarted in 1949.
Hiram Walker took over in 1970, and it later passed to Allied Lyons and Allied Domecq. Inver House Distillers bought Balblair in 1996. Inver House has been part of International Beverage Holdings since 2006.
In 2007 Inver House repackaged the single malt and released only vintages, starting with 1997, 1989 and 1979 expressions. The Single Cask says the distillery returned to a conventional age statement range in April 2019. The distillery also appears in Ken Loach's film The Angel's Share, where it stood in for the home of the fictional Malt Mill cask.
Who owns Balblair?
Inver House Distillers has owned Balblair since 1996. Its parent is International Beverage Holdings, the international arm of ThaiBev.
