History
Annabel Thomas's parents bought a farm on the 7,000 acre Drimnin Estate in 2002. Her father suggested a distillery in the old farm steading. In 2012 she took a sabbatical from a London consultancy job to write a business plan for an organic, net zero distillery. She left her job in 2013 to raise funds and oversee the build, and the first spirit ran in March 2017. By her own account she did not like whisky at first.
Funding came from family, friends, loans, seed investors under the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme and a 600,000 pound EU grant via the Scottish Government. In March 2020 the distillery raised 1.7 million pounds to expand.
Jim Swan
The late Dr Jim Swan consulted on one of his last projects. Annabel says investors would not have backed a team that had never made whisky without his involvement. His biggest influence was using STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) red wine casks. He died in 2017, about two weeks before the first spirit came off the stills. She kept his two recommended yeasts but often trials a third, and tests new ones in five litre buckets before scaling up.
Organic and net zero
The official site says the copper pot stills run on 100 percent renewable energy, the barley is organic and Scottish, mashing and fermentation times are long, and bottles use 100 percent recycled glass. It reports verified net zero carbon emissions for scopes 1 and 2, meaning emissions the distillery controls directly. Scope 3, such as packaging, haulage and farming, is harder to control. Wikipedia reports it as the first UK distillery to reach net zero in whisky production, a claim the official site does not make in those words. It became a certified B Corp in February 2022 and introduced a free postage bottle return scheme in 2024.
The range
Organic Single Malt, the flagship
Organic Botanical Spirit, made from unaged malted barley spirit with botanicals, first released September 2018
Cask Strength Organic Single Malt
Quiet Rebels, a limited people series (editions include Lorna, Gordon, Simon and a whisky liqueur, Sarah)
Huntress, a limited experimental series from 2022, with Lemon Meadow in 2025
Aon single cask bottlings, listed at 94.95 pounds each, with editions for Germany
Ainnir, the inaugural single malt, had its first bottle sold at auction in 2020 for 41,004 pounds for charity. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society says that quadrupled the previous record for a first bottle from a new distillery.
Visiting
The official site has a Visit Our Distillery section for a slow adventure on the west coast. Tour times and prices were not confirmed here, so check before publishing. Morvern is remote, so allow travel time.
Sources and gaps
Sources: Wikipedia, Nc'nean distillery; ncnean.com home and sustainability pages; Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Nc'nean distillery profile (Unfiltered, January 2025).
Gaps for Filip: the stills and capacity line comes from a Wikipedia infobox snippet only. Visitor details, tour prices, opening times and bottle ABVs were not verified. Net zero covers scopes 1 and 2 only. Tasting notes left out. Set the URL slug in SEO settings and add a cover image.
