History of Zuidam Distillers
Fred and Hélène van Zuidam founded a family distilling business in 1976, concentrating on liqueurs and genever. Their sons Patrick and Gilbert later took key leadership roles, with Patrick especially associated with whisky production and Gilbert with commercial development.
The company began filling experimental whisky barrels in 1996. Those trials later developed into the Millstone range. The name recalls traditional Dutch windmills once used for grinding grain and reflects the family’s interest in sourcing and processing cereals themselves.
People and ownership
People associated with the distillery’s history include Fred, Hélène, Patrick and Gilbert van Zuidam. Names refer to documented roles during the venture and should not be taken as an assertion about unchanged present ownership.
Whisky production and maturation
Zuidam grows much of the rye and barley for its whisky. The producer cites unusually long fermentation, around seven days, followed by slow distillation in copper pot stills.
Millstone 100 Rye is made with malted and unmalted rye and matures in new American oak for a minimum 100 months, around eight years and four months. That bottle is different from the malted-barley expressions in the Millstone portfolio.
