Tormore Distillery: The Speyside Landmark Built Around a Tune-Playing Clock
Updated: 2 days ago
Tormore is one of the most architecturally striking distilleries in Scotland. It sits in Speyside, about 1 km south of the River Spey, and it was built to be seen. Granite walls, copper rotors and a clock that plays Scottish tunes make it hard to mistake for anywhere else.

The story of Tormore
Construction of Tormore began in 1958 and finished in 1960. It was designed by Alexander Cullen, with input from Sir Albert Richardson, for Long John International. It is a listed building.
The site was planned as more than a distillery. A village of workers houses was built in the same style, and it was offered for sale as a whole in 2004 for offers over 550,000 pounds. The gardens carry topiary hedges clipped to the shape of a bell or a still.
Growth and ownership
In 1972 the distillery was expanded from four stills to eight. In 1984 the stills were converted to be heated by wood chips, a by-product of the area's forestry. Long John was absorbed by Whitbread and Co in 1975, and the distillery was acquired by Allied Distillers Ltd the same year. Pernod Ricard controlled Tormore after buying Allied Domecq in 2005, until it was sold to Elixir Distillers in 2022.
A time capsule in the forecourt
A time capsule in the shape of a pot still is buried in the forecourt. It is intended to be opened in 2060 and contains glasses and a tregnum of Long John, the original owners' own blended whisky.
The whisky
Wikipedia lists Tormore single malt as sold in 14 and 16 year old versions. Independent bottlers including Signatory Vintage, Cadenhead's, Blackadder, That Boutique-y Whisky Company and Douglas Laing have also released it. The current official range under Elixir Distillers should be checked before publishing.
