Atchison versus Lawrenceburg: two different facilities
MGP Ingredients is headquartered in Atchison, Kansas. The Atchison distillery historically produced grain neutral spirits and industrial alcohol, but the company announced its closure in July 2023 and reported that distilling stopped in December 2023. Its ingredient-processing and research operations in Atchison continue. It would be wrong to describe Atchison as an operating bourbon or rye distillery in 2026.
MGP’s whiskey distillery is in Lawrenceburg and neighbouring Greendale, Indiana. The site traces roots to the nineteenth century and was later associated with Seagram. MGP acquired the Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana assets in December 2011. Its premium bourbon and rye whiskey production supports many brands, both company-owned and third-party.
Whiskey production, brands and casks
At Lawrenceburg, grain recipes, controlled fermentation, distillation and barrel ageing produce a range of bourbon and rye mash bills. The site plays a major role in contract and sourced whiskey. The distillery’s own current and historical brand families include MGP, Remus and Rossville Union; Penelope is another business-owned brand. Actual recipes, ages and strengths depend on the bottle and release.
Can you visit MGP Distillery?
MGP’s official Lawrenceburg distillery information states that it is not open to the general public for regular tours. The historic Atchison distilling facility is closed. Do not plan a distillery visit from a generic Atchison address.
