Who founded Holy Distillery?

The distillery was founded on Christmas 2016 by Alex Chang, who studied civil engineering in the United States before entering the spirits industry. The English name reflects his Christian faith. The Chinese name, He Li, means working together.

What does it make?

Whisky is the main focus. The distillery runs a 1,000-litre American-made hybrid copper still and makes whisky from several grain bases: malted barley, Taiwanese rice and American corn. The spirit is matured in a range of oak casks.

Awards

  • 2018: an earlier expression won a bronze medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition

  • 2020: Amazing Grace Single Cask Rice Whisky named Best Taiwanese Grain Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards

Visiting

According to Wikipedia the distillery is open to visitors and has an on-site tasting workshop. It also offers a private cask programme, with single barrel bottlings aged at least five years.

From a stainless steel still to a copper hybrid

A retailer profile of Holy Distillery says Alex Chang founded it in Yingge, New Taipei City, in 2016 and started making whisky with a stainless steel still at the end of Christmas that year. He experimented with different grains, including malted barley, Taiwanese rice and American corn, and with different yeasts, then aged the new spirits in several types of oak barrels.

At the end of 2018 the distillery bought a copper, steam heated hybrid still with a capacity of 1,000 litres.

Rum, plum wine and gin

The same profile says Holy Distillery also makes rum from Taiwanese sugar cane and cane sugar, plus limited edition plum wines. Holy Valor Gin was launched in May 2022.

Whiskybase describes Holy as a craft distillery just outside Taipei City, where Alex Chang acts as owner, master distiller, barrel manager and master blender.
