History and background

Distillery history and production

Destillerie Farthofer traces its family farming and distilling roots in Austria's Mostviertel region to 1867. Josef Farthofer, the fifth generation, has developed a certified-organic spirits business following a field-to-bottle philosophy.

Its own account distinguishes the Mostelleria visitor location in Öhling from the Malzwelt malting and whisky-distilling site in Biberbach. The current official shop lists organic single malts matured in red-wine casks.

History

Josef Farthofer founded the company, and he runs it with his wife Doris. The business first became known through Mostello, a pear based aperitif made from Mostviertel cider pears, and a vodka that won a world's best title. Whisky came later.

From the field to the bottle

According to the Lower Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO, January 2026), the grain is grown on the distillery's own 50 hectare organic farm in Biberbach, rather than bought in. Since 2018 the barley is malted on the company's own drum malting plant, which is unusual for a small distillery. The company employs 13 people. The water comes from the farm's own spring.

Range

  • Seven different whiskies, made from the farm's own grain, including single malt and rye based bottlings

  • Mostello

  • Gin, rum and vodka

  • Cask finishes that include casks that previously held Mostello, and casks from small breweries
