History and production

The old Crolly doll factory

The Donegal News reported in June 2020 that the Crolly Distillery Company was set to become the first to successfully distil whiskey in Donegal in more than 180 years. The promoters, Joe Devenney, Conor McMenamin and Kieran Davis, were developing it on the former Crolly Doll factory site, a building completed in 1903 by the Congested Districts Board.

  • Production target: over 15,000 litres of alcohol a year for the first five years

  • Stills: traditional copper pot stills brought to life by distillers from Belfast

  • Funding: 121,000 euros of support from Udaras na Gaeltachta, plus pre-sold casks through the Crolly Founders 180 Club

  • Plans: a bar, restaurant and visitor centre in a second phase, and a whiskey academy

  • Maturation: three years and a day is the legal minimum, so the first whiskey could not be bottled before 2023
