Founders and early years
ASW was founded by Jim Chasteen and Charlie Thompson, who started planning a craft distillery in 2008 as friends and roommates, according to Whiskey University. The founders' own company page and LinkedIn put the start of the business at October 2009, while TasteAtlas gives 2016 as the founding year, which appears to refer to when production began locally. Sources therefore differ on the date.
Atlanta magazine reported in August 2016 that, five years after launching, the pair had just run spirit through their own custom copper stills for the first time. Until then they had outsourced production of their bourbon and whiskey to a distillery in Charleston. Thompson told the magazine that the goal was always to bring production to Atlanta.
The distillery
The production site is on Armour Drive in Atlanta, close to SweetWater Brewing Company, and opened for tours and tastings in 2016. The magazine named the next planned releases as a bourbon made from corn grown at Georgia's Riverview Farms and a brandy made from Mercier Orchards apples.
Recognition
Wikipedia records that in 2018 the distillery's Duality Double Malt Whiskey became Georgia's first Double Gold Medal whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
