Sempreon Begins, India–Scotland Whisky Pact and Rare Bourbon: 2 November News

WHISKY CLAN GLOBAL NEWS | Monday 2 November 2026 | Reporting cutoff: approximately 09:00 GMT | By the Whisky Clan editorial team

A new name is due to appear on America's spirits market today, while Scottish and Indian whisky organisations are deepening cooperation even as a separate tariff dispute remains unresolved. A tightly limited bourbon is raising scholarship money in Colorado, The Whisky Exchange is reshaping its buying and auction leadership, and two live whisky auctions have real deadlines for collectors.

Monday's digest combines genuinely actionable 2–3 November dates with important developments confirmed late last week. We state the original announcement dates separately from when a company name, sale, appointment or auction deadline takes effect. US markets had not yet opened at this morning's UK editorial cutoff.

In today's edition

Sempreon: MGP's new identity is scheduled to begin today

MGP Ingredients says its corporate name becomes Sempreon, Inc., and its Nasdaq symbol changes from MGPI to CASK with effect from Monday 2 November. That is today's timetable, not a fresh announcement: the plan was first made public on Thursday 15 October and reaffirmed in the company's 28 October third-quarter results.

For whisky drinkers, the change does not mean familiar names vanish from bottles. The group includes Penelope Bourbon, Rebel, Ezra Brooks and a substantial distilling business, with the MGP Distillery identity remaining important to its production story. The rebrand is a corporate umbrella intended to connect branded spirits, contract distilling and its speciality-ingredients operation.

Behind the marketing move is a difficult operating backdrop. Company-reported consolidated third-quarter sales were $117.9m, against $130.9m a year earlier; the distilling-solutions unit cited an oversupplied market. The earnings release is a useful caution against reading a name change as proof that the American whiskey supply cycle has improved. The intended ticker change should be checked after the US trading session begins; we have not represented pre-market scheduling as a completed trade.

Indian and Scotch whisky groups sign a cooperation agreement

The Indian Malt Whisky Association and the Scotch Whisky Association have signed an agreement in New Delhi to share knowledge on sustainability, authenticity, regulatory practice and intellectual-property protection. An industry report published Friday 30 October said the signing was witnessed by Scotland's First Minister John Swinney. The pact connects two substantial whisky-making traditions but it does not change customs duties by itself.

The distinction matters because Monday also brings a separate government-industry discussion about bulk Scotch under the UK–India trade agreement. Reuters explained on 2 November that officials and industry disagree over classification of bulk shipments, which account for roughly 80% of British Scotch imports into India. That dispute was already covered in Whisky Clan's Sunday roundup; today's point is the separate cooperation agreement and the new Reuters context, not a claim that the tariff case has been resolved.

Neither organisation announced a change to legal whisky definitions in the cooperation report. A framework to defend category integrity and exchange skills is valuable, but progress will depend on how the bodies turn it into specific projects. The treaty dispute should be judged on an official customs decision, not on ceremonial photographs.

Colorado: a 230-bottle bourbon backs university hockey

Breckenridge Distillery and University of Denver Athletics announced a limited Single Barrel Bourbon on Thursday 29 October, celebrating the university's record eleventh NCAA men's ice-hockey title. The 230-bottle run is priced at $179.99 per bottle and bottled at 101.7 US proof, equivalent to 50.85% ABV; the distillery says $100 from each bottle sold benefits the Denver Men's Ice Hockey Scholarship.

The whiskey was selected with university supporters at the distillery. That creates a clearer charitable connection than a simple commemorative label: if all 230 bottles sell at the stated terms, the per-bottle donation could add up to $23,000, although that is a calculation rather than a confirmed amount raised. The official release identifies two Denver-area retailers and permitted local delivery channels; it does not establish current stock at this morning's cutoff.

The distillery gives a flavour profile led by brown sugar, oak spice, caramel, cinnamon and pepper. These are producer tasting notes, not Whisky Clan tasting findings. The significant dates are the university title on 11 April and the whiskey announcement on 29 October; neither happened today.

The Whisky Exchange changes its buying and auction leadership

The London spirits retailer confirmed two senior appointments on 29 October, widely reported in the trade press on 29–30 October. Nick Larsson-Bell, previously senior drinks buyer at Harvey Nichols, is due to take up the buying-director role on Monday 9 November, succeeding Dawn Davies. Freeman Ho, formerly involved with Sotheby's Hong Kong spirits auctions, joined as head of auction in October.

Larsson-Bell's remit spans buying, supply chain, old and rare whisky and the retailer's own-label range. Ho's remit covers auction valuation and selling. Both hires matter beyond the personnel page: buying decisions shape what regular customers can discover, while auction leadership affects the route by which private collectors source or dispose of rare bottles.

There is no announced acquisition or new retail format attached to these hires. Their future impact will be seen in product selection, consignments, advice and cross-market relationships, not in the announcement itself.

Auction clock: Monday and Tuesday closing times matter

For collectors, the most immediate actionable news is not a speculative bottle valuation but the closing clock. Highland Whisky Auctions lists its October catalogue closing on Monday 2 November at 21:00 UK time. Whisky.Auction's November Whisky & Spirits sale shows staggered finishes beginning Tuesday 3 November at 19:30 GMT.

Both sales were advertised in advance. They are included today because the deadline, rather than a newly reported auction result, is the relevant event. Listed opening bids are not sale prices, and a lot appearing on a website does not guarantee that it will sell. Check buyer's premiums, delivery restrictions, conditions and any reserves before bidding.

The two catalogues are independent; their closing arrangements are not interchangeable. Specific lots and their current prices can change, so we have not reproduced live bids in this editorial.

What to watch next: confirmed dates, not invented breaking news

2 November — The Dalmore's 102 Proof Aged 12 Years was announced 27 October and scheduled for its exclusive online debut today. The stated UK price was £90 at 51% ABV. We previously reported this in our 28 October edition and Sunday recap, so this is an availability reminder, not another launch announcement.

2 November — Indian commerce and whisky-industry representatives are expected to discuss the bulk Scotch tariff dispute. No binding resolution was verified by this editorial cutoff; readers should look for a government or customs decision before assuming the import treatment has changed.

4 November — Jackton Distillery's RAER digital tasting is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, according to an invitation published on 2 October. Its participant registration deadline was 16 October; this is a social follow-along for those who missed a place, not a claim that bookings remain open.

6 November — Independent bottler Rare Find has scheduled its Long Game old-cask collection, already covered in the 28 October daily report. A November shop date is not a Monday news announcement.

Research and corrections: Each event has its original public announcement or report date separated from the sale, ticker transition, appointment or auction close. As at approximately 09:00 GMT on 2 November, no completed US trading under ticker CASK, auction sales or India customs resolution was independently confirmed.

Both images are genuine photographs with Commons licence evidence and named authors; the headline photograph depicts an unbranded whisky glass and the body photograph is Buffalo Trace barrels, not any featured corporate site. No press-supplied product picture has been copied.
