The story
Westland has built its identity on place. The Pacific Northwest supplies the Garry oak for the Garryana series and the Skagit Valley supplies the barley, and the distillery keeps a farm there for trialling craft malting barley varieties. That focus on local grain and local wood is what sets it apart in the American single malt field.
In 2025 the American Single Malt category was formally enacted, and Westland sits at the centre of the producers who use it. Wikipedia credits the distillery with consistent showings at international competitions, including a Best American Single Malt title at the World Whiskies Awards in 2023.

The Skagit County Sheriff investigated in August and the incident was reported to the public in September. We have not seen an update on the case.
