The founders
The distillery was founded by Jason and Alayne MacIsaac. According to the distillery's own Our Story page, they gradually built their first distillery in their garage at home in Shirley, a small town on southern Vancouver Island whose original name was Sheringham. The company is named after it.
Alayne MacIsaac is co-founder and chief executive officer and leads strategy, brand and sales. Jason MacIsaac is co-founder and master distiller. He is a classically trained chef who spent years cooking in kitchens in Canada and abroad before distilling.
The story so far
The distillery says its aim from the start was to make finely crafted spirits that evoke a strong sense of place. Its glass bottles recall the prohibition era moonshine bottles Jason found near the site of a local historical still. Every bottle is embossed with a sailboat that recalls Favorite, a schooner that once sailed the Salish Sea.
The distillery says Alayne has spent more than a decade growing it from a small family business into an internationally recognised spirits brand.
The range
Its spirits include Seaside Gin, made with winged kelp harvested from the waters near the west coast of Vancouver Island, a coffee liqueur and a vodka. Check the official website for the current range, which is led by gin and liqueurs rather than whisky.
