Founders
Its own site says it was co-founded by spirits expert Allen Katz and Tom Potter, a co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery. Retailers and Master of Malt put the founding at 2011. A Forbes report on its 2025 sale says Katz and Potter founded it in the late 1990s, which conflicts with the 2011 date, so we give both. Potter co-founded Brooklyn Brewery in 1987 and served as its CEO and chairman.
What it makes
The distillery says its ambition was to bring great gin and rye whiskey back to New York, and that its rye story starts with ten seeds of a nearly forgotten heirloom grain, Horton rye, grown on New York soil. Ragtime Rye is its best known whiskey and has been issued as a bottled in bond. A Jaywalker Bar is linked to the distillery.
Ownership
Forbes reported in May 2025 that Loch Lomond Group acquired the New York Distilling Company. We did not read the full article.
