Jeptha Creed Distillery: Kentucky History, Bloody Butcher Bourbon and Visits

4 min read

Jeptha Creed is a Kentucky farm distillery built around the Nethery family's agricultural background and an heirloom red corn called Bloody Butcher. Its Shelbyville setting connects the grain in the whiskey to the people growing and distilling it.

The different bourbon labels are not simply different packages for one recipe. Four Grain, Bottled-in-Bond and Six Year Old Wheated releases vary in grain composition, maturation or strength, so this guide keeps their specifications distinct.

Jeptha Creed Distillery: history and development

Jeptha Creed grew from the Nethery family's farming interests into a distilling business led by Joyce and her daughter Autumn. Joyce brought a chemical engineering background to the production side while the wider family supplied agricultural experience.

The distillery opened in 2016. Its tenth-anniversary plans in 2026 describe an expanding visitor experience, but the underlying identity remains a farm-based producer rather than a historic brand revived from someone else's nineteenth-century whisky.

Bloody Butcher corn is part of that identity. Its colour is visible in the grain, not a promise that the finished bourbon will be red. Fermentation, distillation and years in wood determine the eventual whiskey.

People, ownership and identity

The producer presents Jeptha Creed as a family enterprise, with Joyce and Autumn central to its leadership. That account is a better basis for this guide than guessing ownership percentages or assigning a newly changed executive title.

The practical division between cultivation, distilling and presentation helps explain the business. The farming link is important, but it does not mean that every grain percentage is identical across the range.

How the whiskey is made

The distillery uses Bloody Butcher corn in its bourbon recipes, accompanied by other grains chosen for each expression. Its current Bottled-in-Bond page specifies 75% corn, 20% malted rye and 5% malted barley.

The six-year wheated bourbon instead uses 20% malted wheat alongside 75% corn and 5% malted barley. That is a genuine recipe difference, not a marketing synonym for the rye-bearing release.

Maturation in oak and bottling strength add further distinctions. Whisky Clan records the producer's documented specifications and does not turn a general family story into an invented fermentation time or annual capacity.

Release milestones and recognition

The six-year wheated release illustrates how the range has developed beyond the earliest distillery batches. The 2026 visitor-expansion announcement is a separate milestone in the site's hospitality programme.

No Whisky Clan tasting rating is implied by the producer photographs. Awards should be checked against the exact whiskey and competition year rather than applied to the entire distillery.

Visiting and current practical information

Jeptha Creed offers scheduled experiences at 500 Gordon Lane, Shelbyville. Consult the official experience calendar for the activity, duration, age restrictions and access arrangements that apply to your visit.

A production tour, barrel experience and casual hospitality visit may have different booking requirements. The family and grain story can provide useful context for comparing the bourbon recipes, without treating tasting descriptions as an objective test with one correct answer.
