Where is Glenkinchie Distillery?
Glenkinchie is in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian, about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The name Kinchie is a corruption of De Quincy, the original owners of the land. It is pronounced glen-KIN-shee.
Glenkinchie history
Its origins date to around 1825, when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate. It seems likely to be the Milton Distillery previously recorded in the area, and the brothers probably renamed it around 1837. In 1853 the Rate brothers were bankrupted and the site was converted to a sawmill. In 1881 the plant was rebuilt and whisky making restarted under Major James Grey.
In 1914 Glenkinchie joined Rosebank, St Magdalene, Grange and Clydesdale to form Scottish Malt Distillers, which merged with The Distillers Company in 1925. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors became a museum of malt whisky. Guinness acquired The Distillers Company in 1986 and merged with Grand Metropolitan in 1997 to form Diageo.

More on Glenkinchie's history
The Single Cask traces the site to 1825, when brothers John and George Rate began distilling in converted farm buildings, reportedly known as Milton. It says the brothers rebuilt and licensed the operation as Glenkinchie in 1837, naming it after the estate. The earlier part of this guide gives 1825 for the founding, and 1837 is the date The Single Cask uses for the licensed Glenkinchie distillery.
The Rates were bankrupted in 1853 and the site fell quiet, reportedly working as a sawmill. Distilling resumed around 1880 to 1881 under a group of Edinburgh investors led by Major James Grey, who rebuilt the distillery into essentially the form it holds today. By the 1890s it was supplying blends, with Johnnie Walker named as one.
Floor malting stopped in 1969. The old malting floor became a malt whisky museum with a large scale model of a working distillery, and the barley is now bought in.
Classic Malts and the Four Corners
In 1988 United Distillers chose Glenkinchie as the Lowland representative in the original Classic Malts Selection, a six strong range that showed off Scotland's regions through one distillery each. It has held that role for almost forty years. The Single Cask dates the Classic Malts selection to 1988, while some other sources give 1989.
Diageo now markets Glenkinchie as the Lowland stop on its Four Corners of Scotland trail, with Cardhu for Speyside, Caol Ila for Islay and Clynelish for the Highlands. The visitor centre opened in October 2020.
Glenkinchie production facts at a glance
Stills: one wash still and one spirit still. The Single Cask gives about 21,000 litres for the wash still and 17,500 for the spirit still, while the figures earlier in this guide are about 30,963 and 20,998 litres. The sources conflict, so check before publishing.
Capacity: around 2.5 million litres of pure alcohol (The Single Cask). The earlier figure in this guide is 2.7 million.
Mash tun: nine tonne stainless steel lauter type, filled from a Porteus mill about ten times a week.
Washbacks: six, made of Oregon pine. Fermentation is quoted at 60 to 75 hours.
Condensers: traditional worm tubs rather than shell and tube.
Water: burns rising in the Lammermuir Hills.
Malt: unpeated, or with at most the faintest trace of peat depending on the source.
The wash still in particular is often described as the largest pot still on the Scottish mainland, and both stills carry a constricted section above the pot that encourages reflux.
Awards, blends and independent bottlings
Glenkinchie 12 Year Old was named Best Lowland Single Malt at the 2013 World Whiskies Awards. Most of the spirit goes into Diageo's blends, and the Single Cask understands it contributes to blends including Johnnie Walker, though Diageo keeps its recipes confidential. What remains as single malt is mostly the 12 Year Old and the Distillers Edition, plus occasional Special Releases and Manager's Drams.
Independent releases exist from bottlers such as Gordon and MacPhail, including their Connoisseurs Choice range, but they are thin on the ground. The Single Cask reports that 1966 vintage bottlings from independents have made roughly 1,000 to 2,600 pounds at auction. Treat auction figures as examples, not guarantees.
