Detroit City Distillery: Michigan Whiskey and Visitor Guide

6 min read

Detroit City Distillery brings Michigan-grown grain into the city’s industrial surroundings. Its range offers three clear starting points: Butcher’s Cut Bourbon, Four Grain Bourbon and Homegrown Rye. Each has a published recipe, making this an especially useful producer for comparing how different grain combinations shape American whiskey. For a visit, first decide whether you want the Eastern Market cocktail room or a tour of the separate Whiskey Factory production site.

In this guide

  • Founded by a group of childhood friends, Detroit City Distillery pairs Detroit production with ingredients from Michigan farms.

  • The principal whiskey choices include two 100-proof bourbons and Homegrown Rye at 94 proof, with individual recipes rather than one shared mash bill.

  • The tasting room is on Riopelle Street; production tours and the Blend Your Own Bourbon experience take place at 1000 Maple Street.

History and the people behind the whiskey

The producer traces its beginnings to eight childhood friends who wanted to make spirits using traditional methods. Its company profile dates the business to 2014. Eastern Market provided the original setting, connecting the distillery to an established food-trading neighbourhood and to the farms supplying its ingredients.

Master distiller John P. Jerome gives Butcher’s Cut a personal connection to that neighbourhood. The bourbon honours his grandfather, whose working life included butchery in Eastern Market. That family account explains the name; it does not imply that today’s commercial distillery operated during Prohibition. The current bottles identify Detroit City Distillery, LLC as the producer.

Two Detroit addresses, two different visits

The Riopelle Street tasting room is the place for cocktails in Eastern Market. Its menu changes seasonally, so an older photographed menu should not be treated as a promise of what will be served on the day. The distillery also makes gin and vodka, giving the bar a broader remit than whiskey alone.

The Whiskey Factory is at 1000 Maple Street. The producer identifies this as the location where its products are distilled and where booked production experiences take place. Check the venue on your reservation before travelling: entering the tasting-room address into a map will take you to a different destination.

Michigan grain and deliberately different recipes

The useful production story is in the published grain bills. Butcher’s Cut combines 68% corn, 27% rye and 5% specialty roasted barley malts. Its maturation description refers to hand-smoked northern Michigan oak. The producer does not give a universal age statement for this expression, so its age should be checked on the specific bottle.

Four Grain adds red winter wheat to corn, rye and malted barley. Homegrown Rye takes the contrasting approach of putting rye almost entirely in charge. The latter’s story recalls distillation on a small copper pot still at the original Eastern Market premises; the current visitor page directs production tours to the Whiskey Factory. These are different stages in the business’s development.

Bourbons and rye to compare

Butcher’s Cut and Four Grain are both bottled at 50% ABV, allowing a comparison without a change in strength. Four Grain’s recipe is 57% corn, 19% rye, 12% red winter wheat and 12% malted barley. Its stated minimum maturation is two years.

Homegrown Rye uses 97% rye and 3% specialty roasted barley malts, is matured for at least two years and is bottled at 47% ABV. The producer describes a buttery, spicy character. The bottle profiles below paraphrase its tasting descriptions, giving a guide to the intended styles rather than a guarantee that every drinker will perceive the same flavours.

Single barrels and the Whiskey Club

The currently linked Whiskey Club page describes four members-only bottles each year, selected from individual barrels, together with gatherings at the Whiskey Factory. This is the route to follow for releases outside the regular range. A membership offer is separate from a promise that any particular old release remains obtainable.

Single-barrel names, strengths and ages can change. Check the exact label and release announcement before treating a club bottle as equivalent to one reviewed previously. The standard expressions provide a steadier introduction; a limited bottle is most useful when its particular barrel details are available for comparison.

Planning a visit

The official visit page offers Whiskey Factory tours on selected Saturdays and a separately bookable Blend Your Own Bourbon experience. The latter introduces barrel selection, tasting and the process of assembling a preferred blend. Reserve the specific experience through the producer’s booking link and use the confirmation for current arrival details.

For a less structured stop, the Eastern Market tasting room offers cocktails. A sensible itinerary can combine a pre-booked production visit with time in the market, allowing for the journey between addresses. Confirm opening times, accessibility needs and any group arrangements directly with the relevant venue before setting out.
