Bothy Distillery: Glen Prosen History, Whisky and Visitor Guide
Bothy Distillery in Glen Prosen is part of a new wave of Scottish whisky producers with a strong sense of place. The Angus site began producing its own single malt spirit in July 2026. It is important to distinguish that maturing new make from blended Scotch already sold under the wider Bothy name: the producer says its own whisky will not be ready for bottling before 2036.

Test your Bothy knowledge: four quick questions
Where is Bothy Distillery?
The distillery sits in Glen Prosen in the Angus Glens, north of Kirriemuir, on the edge of the Cairngorms landscape. The glen has a long association with rural farming and stories of illicit distilling. The modern distillery is a working site, and its visitor centre creates a way to explore that setting without pretending it is already an established mature single malt producer.
The current official postcode is DD8 4SD. Some older research lists another Glen Prosen postcode, but the company's own contact information and visitor pages should take precedence when planning a trip.
Bothy Distillery history: from jam to dram
The beginnings lie in Kim Cameron's small business in Angus. Gin Bothy grew from a food and preserving idea into a craft drinks producer, building a following around Scottish ingredients and place. Its development included the Bothy Experience in Glamis and a larger production operation.
In 2024 Glen Prosen was identified as the home of the new Bothy whisky distillery. The team developed buildings and visitor experiences while preparing to distil. In February 2026 the distillery announced Paddy Sinclair as distillery manager, and by July 2026 its own spirit production was under way.
The change is significant, but it is not the same as an immediate new single malt launch. Spirit laid down in the first casks has years of maturation ahead. On its cask ownership page, Bothy explicitly anticipates its first own Scotch whisky releases no earlier than 2036, choosing an extended maturation horizon beyond the statutory Scotch minimum.
Who owns Bothy Distillery and who makes the spirit?
Bothy Distillery belongs to the Bothy Trading group, a business associated with founder Kim Cameron. The producer identifies Ron Welsh as master blender and Paddy Sinclair as distillery manager. The roles should not be conflated: distillery production and the selection of casks and blends are separate but related jobs.
The distillery's cask programme includes private and syndicate ownership. Potential buyers should read the producer's full terms, costs and risks rather than treating future whisky appreciation as guaranteed.
How whisky is made at Glen Prosen
Glen Prosen single malt starts with malted barley, fermentation and copper pot distillation. The producer describes Scottish-made equipment, including stills built by Forsyths, and a relatively small annual cask programme. Different oak types will influence the spirit during long maturation.
The distillery's own cask documents describe ex-bourbon and sherry wood as part of its plan, with casks drawn from Kentucky and Jerez. The maturation claims are prospective where the new site has not yet released mature whisky. Whisky Clan does not publish invented sensory notes for the spirit.
Bothy whisky bottles and releases explained
New distilleries often sell existing blends while their first casks mature. Bothy illustrates why a catalogue must separate a brand release from the exact distillery that produced and matured its liquid.
Release or style | What is verified |
|---|---|
Gunshot 8 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky | An existing Bothy marketed blend. Do not describe it as whisky aged for eight years at the 2026 Glen Prosen distillery. |
Glen Prosen new make spirit | Whisky spirit produced from July 2026. Not bottled mature single malt Scotch whisky. |
Glen Prosen future single malt | The producer's cask ownership materials anticipate a first own Scotch release no earlier than 2036. No official released bottle or strength is confirmed. |
Bottles sourced from other producers and new spirit not yet legally matured into Scotch are not counted as released Glen Prosen single malts in the Whisky Clan bottle library.
Awards and recognition
The earlier Gin Bothy portfolio has received food and spirits awards, but these are not awards for the newly distilled Glen Prosen whisky. As of October 2026, the producer's own single malt has not been released, and Whisky Clan has not verified any tasting competition medals for it.
Visiting Bothy Distillery in Angus
Bothy's official visitor information lists the visitor centre as open Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, with bookable experiences across the week. Guided tastings, the distillery setting and additional food and accommodation experiences may be offered. Confirm the current calendar, access arrangements, age rules and prices before travelling into Glen Prosen.
A tour of a developing distillery can be particularly interesting because visitors can see the beginning of the production and maturation story, rather than only shelves of finished bottles.

Frequently asked questions about Bothy Distillery
When did Bothy Distillery start distilling single malt?
The producer says it began production of Glen Prosen spirit in July 2026. A new whisky spirit is not immediately a mature, saleable Scotch whisky.
Can I buy Bothy Distillery's own matured Glen Prosen single malt?
Not as a released mature expression as of 25 October 2026. The distillery anticipates its own Scotch whisky bottling from 2036 onwards. Existing branded blended whisky should not be mislabelled as spirit from this newly producing site.
Who founded Bothy Distillery?
The project grew from Kim Cameron's Bothy business in Angus. Bothy Trading Ltd operates the brand and distillery.
Can I visit Bothy Distillery?
Yes. The official site lists the visitor centre Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, with experiences bookable at other times. Check the live visitor page before setting off.
Where is Bothy Distillery?
In Glen Prosen near Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland. The company gives the postal district DD8 4SD.
